A day in the life of Hugh Cairns. Field Service Engineer
I am a Field Service Engineer at Vista Retail Support covering the Central South Coast and the Isle of Wight. I have been at Vista for four years and have lived near the south coast for around twelve. I enjoy meeting people and my current job affords me the opportunity to do this and assist a range of people back to full trading while sharing a laugh along the way.
Like most people, my day follows a routine. I start with an early breakfast then a parts check in my van and then leave home around 0815. I drive to my drop box to collect and deposit used and unused parts. It’s then time to refuel the van if necessary and crack on with my day.
If there are any high priority parts needed immediately, I’ll call the Contact Centre to check to see if they are available ‘off the shelf’ at my nearby Rico depot. Once this is done, I make my way to my first job and then start working my way systematically through the calls listed on my PDA. I try to ensure jobs are prioritised according to Service Level Agreement (SLA) however I may divert to another nearby customer if I can save unnecessary extra mileage.
During the morning I check the Vista Tech forum on the internet for advice regarding any calls I may not be familiar with, or to check procedures regarding new customers. As we’re acquiring lots of new customers, the Forum is one of the invaluable resources at my disposal.
If I am very busy and SLAs are pressing, I may choose not to stop for lunch and may get something ‘on the fly’, but usually I can get make time for a quick coffee in a nearby cafe.
At the end of the day I look forward to a bike ride along the coast or a drive down to the marina to check on my sailing boat which is moored near Bournemouth. This is a great place to relax, see the sunset, and prepare for another day at Vista Retail Support.
